- Born in April of 1928, her birth name is Marguerite Johnson.
- In 1942, she dropped out of high school and became the first woman cable car conductor in San Francisco.
- She has earned more than twenty awards and nominations for her poetry and music. Earning a Grammy award for "Best Spoken Word Album."
- She is best known for her autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".
- Met Malcolm X in 1964 and helped him build his Organization of African American Unity.
- Met with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and helped serve as a coordinator for his Southern Christian Leadership Conference. King was then assassinated on Angelou's birthday in 1968.
- Her script for the movie "Georgia, Georgia" was the first script by an African American woman ever to be filmed and get nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1972.
- Read her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" on live broadcast at the Inaugural of President Bill Clinton in 1993. She was only one of two poets to read at an Inaugural Address.
- The total of her published verse, non-fiction, and fiction writings include more than 30 best-sellers.
- She recently wrote a book called, "Letter to my Daughter", for the daughter she never had. Which offered advice for many people and also earned many award nominations, including the NAACP Image Award.
